CTO's international events and seminars are a fine balance of knowledge sharing and networking. Events aim to generate dialogue between stakeholders, share essential knowledge and facilitate multi-stakeholder partnerships to broad base the benefits of ICTs. Over the years CTO events have become veritable platforms for advocacy, consultations and relationship building for high level decision makers from both the public sector and private sector. As an intergovernmental organisation, the CTO is uniquely positioned to transform the outcomes of its events in to national policies, allowing stakeholders to realise their ICT goals. Open for members and non-members alike and spreading far beyond the boundaries of the Commonwealth, the CTO events fall into three categories:

  • Global and regional conferences – held in different parts of the Commonwealth, these events address broad themes that appeal to a wider stakeholder group while retaining its core focus, such as Connecting Rural Communities, Digital Broadcasting Switchover and Cybersecurity.
  • High level summits - focusing on a narrowly defined theme, these events aim to produce directly adoptable policy outcomes. The e-Accessibility Summit (London, 30 – 31 August, 2012) produced a set of policy recommendations for the use of ICTs to assist disabled people to lead more fulfilling lives.
  • Information sharing events – organised as platforms to disseminate newly developed information by the CTO or its partners, these events typically deal with research, studies and surveys.

The annual meeting of the CTO’s governing Council, hosted by a member government, is also the occasion for its largest conference, the CTO Forum. Held immediately prior to the Council meeting, the Forum is held under a theme central to the Global ICT agenda. The 2012 CTO Forum was held in Mauritius on the theme of Mobile Broadband for Development with over 150 delegates in attendance who benefited from the inputs of more than 25 global experts. The 53rd Council meeting and the Forum is due to be held in Abuja, Nigeria from 7th to 11th October 2013. The theme for this year's Forum will be Policy Implications of Technological Innovation.
